What is AVID?

AVID is a national program designed to help students get into college. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.

AVID has a simple mission: Get students with college potential to take the most challenging courses and then help them succeed in those courses.

National Statistics

The program was started in California over 20 years ago. Baltimore County and Kenwood High School started its program just a few years ago. AVID gets results.

Of the over 20,000 graduates of the program nationally:

  • 95% have attended college upon graduation
  • 71% have attended 4 year colleges and universities upon graduation (The national average for attending college is 23%)
  • Students in the program are 3 times more likely to attend a 4 year college or university
  • 95% of all AVID graduates say they were prepared for college because of AVID

Students in the AVID program are more likely to be accepted and attend college. They are also more likely to succeed once they get there.

How Does AVID Work?

AVID is designed to give support to students as they take the most rigorous courses offered at Kenwood.

We do that by meeting once a day in the AVID class and learning:

  • Note-taking & study skills
  • Organizational skills
  • SAT preparation
  • Leadership training
  • College requirements for the college application process

Additional Benefits

AVID classes:

  • have college tutors to help in problem areas and serve as role models for the students
  • visit local colleges and univerities so that students can determine what type of college is right for them
  • take cultural field trips to expose students to new experiences
  • host speakers who visit the AVID class to share personal stories of college success and career information with the students.

The AVID Site Team

Students in the AVID program will work with their AVID teacher as well as other faculty on the site team.

The site team is made up of teachers, administrators, and counselors who have been trained in AVID strategies to help meet the needs of the AVID student.
