Social Studies Program

Kenwood High School's Social Studies Department is meeting the goals outlined in The Blueprint for Progress. We are focused on Quality and Committed to Excellence.

The social studies program, in partnership with College Board, is designed to prepare students to reach their maximum potential as responsible, productive citizens and life-long learners. Our program is based on a foundation of skill development and content knowledge at several levels.

In addition to the courses set forth by the Maryland state Department of Education as graduation requirements, the social studies curriculum offers several electives that enhance student awareness of our democratic, pluralistic society.

 

The Social Studies Department Goals:

  • Increase achievement levels of all students
  • Develop assessment tools that will measure students achievement
  • Integrate technology into each curriculum
  • Focus on reading and writing skills development
  • Teach students to think critically and utilize skills for success
  • Differentiate instruction to address the needs of students with a wide range of abilities
  • Include Advanced Placement Vertical Team Strategies to introduce students to skills required for success in AP courses
  • Include values education
  • Include Student Service Learning opportunities in certain course
